Rend Lake is a large southern Illinois reservoir along I-57. IDNR currently rates channel catfish excellent, largemouth bass very good, and both white bass and crappie good for 2026. That gives a St. Louis angler several real reasons to make the longer drive.
Very good 2026 outlook
Recent sampling found a solid share of bass above the 14-inch minimum, with additional fish just below legal length and a smaller group of fish over 18 inches.
Two more viable targets
IDNR rates both fisheries good. White crappie made up the majority of sampled crappie, while white bass in recent surveys showed a broad catchable size range.
ACCESS & TRIP TYPE
Built for more than one style of trip.
IDNR lists boat fishing, ramps, camping, picnicking and handicap access. Because the reservoir has extensive shoreline and multiple access areas, choose a specific ramp or bank area before the drive instead of arriving with only a lake name.
For a mixed-species trip, a light crappie/white-bass setup plus a separate heavier catfish or bass combo is more useful than trying to make one rod do everything.
SITE-SPECIFIC LIMITS
Rend has its own harvest rules.
IDNR currently lists a 14-inch minimum and six-fish daily limit for largemouth or smallmouth bass. Crappie have a 25-fish daily limit, with no more than 10 fish at least 10 inches. Striped, white and hybrid striped bass also have a lake-specific daily limit structure.
