MDC expects fair crappie fishing. Many sampled fish were in the 5–8 inch range, with more 8–10 inch fish expected in spring than the previous year.

Mark Twain Lake covers about 18,600 acres. One of its biggest practical advantages is the network of fish attractors placed by MDC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including shallow and deep locations and some reachable from shore.
A stronger 2026 opportunity
MDC reported a significant increase in white bass in 2025 sampling, with many fish around 12–15 inches. Windy points, submerged islands and long sloping points are key search areas.
Use the official map first
Brush and structure have been added in both deep and shallow water. Bass and crappie anglers have reported success around these attractors, and some locations can be reached from shore.
BEST CRAPPIE WINDOW
Late April into early May.
MDC's annual outlook points to late April and early May as the best crappie period, when fish move shallow and jigs or minnows can be effective. Outside that window, structure becomes even more important.
If you are planning a fall trip from St. Louis, treat crappie as a structure-search game instead of expecting the spring shallow-water pattern.
SHORE ANGLER ANGLE
Not every attractor requires a boat.
MDC specifically notes that some fish-attractor sites can be accessed from shore. That makes the Corps map worth checking before assuming this is strictly a boat destination.
Trip decision: identify two or three reachable pieces of structure before leaving home, then build the tackle plan around those areas.
