Excellent 2026 outlook
IDNR's 2025 survey produced a strong white-bass catch rate, and the agency describes the current population as very abundant. That makes white bass a better-defined trip target than simply "fishing Carlyle."

Carlyle Lake is roughly 24,580 acres and about 50 miles east of St. Louis. IDNR's current lake profile rates white bass and channel catfish as excellent opportunities, while also supporting sauger, crappie, largemouth bass and other species.
Excellent and consistent
IDNR describes the channel-catfish population as consistent and abundant, with quality fish represented in recent sampling and strong angler reports.
Eleven lake ramps
IDNR lists eleven boat ramps around the lake, plus additional Kaskaskia River ramps. The upper and lower parts of Carlyle fish differently, so access choice should follow the species plan.
UPPER VS. LOWER LAKE
Do not treat Carlyle as one uniform basin.
The upper lake is shallower and includes standing timber, islands and tributary inflows such as Hurricane, Bear, Maggot, East Fork and North Fork creeks. Below the railroad tracks, the lower lake opens up considerably.
Cast STL trip call: choose upper-lake cover and tributary influence when that matches your target; choose the more open lower lake when wind, depth or species pattern points there.
SITE-SPECIFIC LIMITS
Two easy numbers to check before keeping fish.
IDNR currently lists a 14-inch minimum and six-fish daily limit for largemouth or smallmouth bass. Crappie have a 10-inch minimum and 15-fish daily limit.
Waterfowl refuge and hunting-area restrictions can affect recreational use in parts of the lake, so check the current IDNR page and posted signs before launching or bank fishing.

- Illinois' official fishery page says Carlyle currently supports excellent populations of crappie, catfish and white bass.
- The lake also supports largemouth bass, sauger, bluegill and other species.
- Bank fishing is available in major state recreation areas, while boat access opens much more water.
