CAST STL · LOCAL TRIP DECISION GUIDE

Where should you fish?
Compare the tradeoffs.

Choose a water that fits your time, season and group. This is a practical comparison—not a live bite report or a promise that a particular lake is stocked.

The nearest lake is not always the right lake. This comparison is a trip-planning tool for St. Louis anglers, especially when time, weather, children, and winter-trout rules narrow the choices. “Best for” is our editorial judgment based on each location's features—not a report that fish are biting today.

Plan a trip in two choicesSelect your time and trip goal above. The tool suggests a starting point and explains what must be checked before you leave. The comparison table below works without JavaScript.

Not a live conditions engine: no crowds, catches, on-site accessibility, stocking dates, or travel times are verified by this tool. Check the official sources and local signage each time.

AT-A-GLANCE COMPARISON

Different water.
Different reasons to go.

Use this chart to narrow the choices, then open the actual guide. Special regulations and closures always override this summary.

WaterWhere / typeBest reason to consider itTradeoff or special check
Jefferson LakeForest Park, St. Louis City
Urban park lake
City-based winter trout; convenient starting point for a shorter outing.Check seasonal trout rules, posted park access, and actual stocking via MDC.
Carondelet Boathouse LakeSouth St. Louis City
Urban park lake
A city option for trout season; the Boathouse lake, not every water in Carondelet, is the trout destination.Don't confuse Boathouse Lake with Horseshoe Lake. Confirm its current trout rules.
Koeneman Park LakeJennings / North County
Small park lake
Winter trout for an angler prepared to fish catch-and-release with legal artificials during the special window.Nov.–Jan. restrictions include catch-and-release and specific tackle limitations; verify MDC and posted signs.
Tilles Park LakeSt. Louis County
Small park lake
Compact urban trout stop; limited water to learn before trying different presentations.Nov.–Jan. trout catch-and-release and lure restrictions; verify the precise lake rules.
Gendron LakeTiemeyer Park / St. Ann
Very small lake
Small-water winter trout without a long drive; different statewide/special regulation profile than Koeneman or Tilles.Check permit requirements if keeping trout, and call the official stocking hotline.
Suson ParkSouth County
Carp Lake + Island Lake
Family-friendly park with two distinct fishing waters and winter trout opportunities.Choose Carp versus Island Lake first; check individual posted rules and seasonal conditions.
Busch WildlifeSt. Charles County
Multiple numbered lakes
Variety and a way to switch lakes after you check the appropriate regulations. Not a single lake: species, special restrictions, access and stockings vary by lake number.
Simpson LakeSt. Louis County
Park lake
Short bank-fishing session when the goal is to learn water or introduce a beginner to bass and panfish tactics. No claim of winter trout stocking. Fish activity can slow markedly as water cools.
Meramec RiverMetro region
Moving river
A different challenge for a prepared angler targeting river species.River gauges, access, wind chill, flooding and actual current matter more than a static map.
Creve Coeur LakeMaryland Heights
Large urban lake
Park remains open, but fishing plans must account for the active invasive-carp work.Public watercraft access closed during removal operations; shoreline work zones and detours may apply.
Creve Coeur exception — November 2026: MDC says boat/watercraft access is closed during invasive carp removal, with access expected to resume by April 1, 2027. The park remains open. Stay 50 feet from nets, buoys and equipment and obey restricted areas. Official MDC alert ↗
THREE REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES

Match the trip
to the constraints.

WINTER / SMALL LURE

Trout after work

Choose a nearby urban trout lake with legal access at the time you can fish. Confirm the lake's lure and release rules before choosing a spinner, jig or bait.

Tradeoff: a recently stocked lake can be busy; a stocked fish is not guaranteed to bite.

FAMILY / SHORT SESSION

One kid. One hour.

On a manageable park lake, let the child help cast, reel and observe. Small hooks and legal bait may work for panfish on some waters; at restricted trout lakes, that setup may not be legal.

Tradeoff: on cold days, a pleasant short trip beats an exhausting one.

VARIETY / PLAN B

Half-day at Busch

Use the numbered-lake map first, plan one primary lake and a legal fallback. Pack for those specific species instead of taking every lure in the garage.

Tradeoff: switching lakes is easy only after checking restrictions and access.
